Rangel, Waters to Blame for Dem Failure

Rangel and Waters, exclusively responsible for Democrat’s poor performance, (whooping) in November’s Mid-Term elections.

I hear a lot being said about these two democrats unwise decision to forego the slap on the wrist in lieu of a public trial. How hard this must be on poor Nancy Pelosi. I think there have been back channel communications urging them to be the sacrificial lambs on the altar of the Progressive agenda.

When the Democrats get their butts handed to them they can say, it’s for the sins of the few or two, rather than because the American Electorate has no stomach for our big government schemes. It’s not because we went against the will of the American people. It’s not because despite being loudly, forcefully, sometimes scarily made aware of just how much the “little people” did not want Obamacare, we passed it by sleight of hand. Noooo, that’s not it, got nothing to do with that.

It’s not because the more we learn of the mess that was ramrodded through under the guise of reform, the more we understand just how incredibly incompetent the President, and the leaders of both houses of congress are.

It’s not the bail outs.

It’s not the massive deficits.

It’s not the muddled foreign policy.

If there is any blame left over when we’re done pinning it all on Rangel and Waters it’s probably Bush’s fault.

If You're Not Outraged, You're Probably a Democrat

Driving in traffic I saw a sign of our times. It was in the form a bumper sticker, actually two of them. One said “Obama ‘08,” the other one said, “If You’re Not Outraged, You’re Not Paying Attention.” Hmm. So the only acceptable political outrage it would seem is liberal outrage. The kind that voted for hope and change. The license plate cover was “Loyola Marymount University Alumni” so perhaps the message was that only “Educated,” outrage is acceptable. He’s probably forwarding this to the thought police even now.

I am working six days a week, so I don’t get to go to a town hall meeting. I sent my Congressman, and Senators an email expressing my outrage about the proposed health care reform. Congressman Thompson was kind enough to send me a polite form letter in reply which basically said, “We are going to do it anyway but thanks for your in put.” At the bottom of the email it said, “Do not reply to this email.” Typical politician. In all fairness it did say that I could email him again with any concerns and he will probably send me another form letter that says, “Can’t you read, I said we are doing it with or with out your concern.”

I’m not edumacated, I know what I know if you know what I mean. I know that I grew up with tribal dental care. Yes, I’m Native American. It used to be that the health clinic did what they call quadrant dentistry. If you went in you got a cleaning, and one quadrant of your dental concerns dealt with in one visit. Say upper left quadrant, two fillings. Lower left, prep for a crown, etc. Now they are subsidized by the state. They get this subsidy based on “Visits.” So cleaning is one visit. Prep for crown. Filling. Crown. Filling. Check up. This has done wonders for the quality and availability of care. If you are unemployed and can call three times a day you can get an appointment in about three months. If you are working, they’ll see you if you are in excruciating pain, maybe.

I’m glad there are other dentists in the area that allow you to pay for your own dental care, they will see you as soon as humanly possible and do as much as they can to make sure that you keep coming back to see them. I may have to pay for my own dental care, what a concept, but personally I’m opposed to being in excruciating pain.

It’s probably good that I can’t attend town hall meeting, it would be infuriating if I got ignored in person instead of via email. One could be tempted to yell a bit, try to get their attention, then the secret service would be investigating me, the President would be keeping a file on me, hey, they may even search my medical records to see what health care I don’t need. Wait, they are already planning to do that any way, so I guess the only recourse I have is to vent a little of my pent up, “Outrage.” Thanks for indulging me, it was very therapeutic.

F-22’s and Your Healthcare Future

Take a good look at this debate. The left is dancing in the aisles because they saved the country from the premier fighter in the world. I’m not really a big fan of the huge price tag of a plane that is not necessary for our national security. I understand that many in side the military do not want more F-22’s at the cost of more immediately useful assets.

However if this is the trend, where advanced weapon systems are not developed, how long will we remain the most effective military power in history?

What does that have to do with health care? Simple, the Democrats are making a bid to make the Government the sole arbiter of what will and will not be paid for to sustain your life. Expensive innovations that sustain life, treat a few patients cannot be funded and will not even be researched. Medical researchers are funded because there is a hope that they will develop something that will be profitable. If the Government is unwilling to purchase these treatments, from doctors there is no motive to develop them. Sounds rational if its some one else’s child dying of a rare blood disease but when it is your child dying for lack of innovation you will realize what a colossal error universal health care is.

Malibu Barbie

With all the speculation about what the aims, goals, dysfunctions of Sarah Palin are, I thought I might make a bid to draft her to the bigger stage. President? No, Governatress. Come again? For those of you outside of the great state of Cali-for-nea. That’s Schwarzenegger speak for the next governor of California.

Some of you may think that I’m joking, perhaps a little tongue in cheek, but since we’ve had a Mr. Universe, why not have a beauty queen. While Governor Schwarzenegger is a closet liberal, Sarah Palin could be an out of the closet conservative and you know how Californians love those who come out of the closet.

If she desires to be another Reagan she could come to the place where the biggest mess is, California, coming soon to the federal level. She could move from Wasilla to Malibu and clean up Sacramento as practice for cleaning up after the ravages of Obamanomics. Perhaps by then she will be viewed by most rational people as the perfect person to clean up after the Obamanation has run it’s course. 2012? Governor of California. 2016? First Female POTUS.

You may be laughing, I am, but you know what? She couldn’t possibly do worse than any of the home grown candidates, by the way the Governator is proof positive that carpet baggers are acceptable to the California Electorate as long as they are photogenic. I do believe in Sarah’s values and sincerity. We need her as much as she needs a stepping stone to Pennsylvania Avenue. Worked for Reagan. Could happen again.

P.S. Thanks for the inspiration Maureen.

Sarah Palin, Rock Star

Sarah Palin, political rock star. Not qualified to be county dog catcher, let alone serve a higher purpose on a national level. Sounds eerily like our current rock star President. He completely and totally obliterated all future quips about political qualifications. He was a community organizer, state senator, U.S. Senator for two years and now he’s doing a bang up job as president of the world and savior of the U.S. economy. Oh wait…

The thing that irritates me the most about the punditry is that they don’t get to choose Presidents, the people do. If the people are willing to ignore Obama’s lack of experience because they wanted a rock star president, there is no amount of political insider speak that will dissuade them from electing a political disaster in progressive, pardon me, political disaster in progress.

Sarah Palin appeals to me because she is fresh, folksy if you want to call it that. “There you go again.” I am not old enough to remember President Reagan delivering that folksy zinger and at the time I was as willing to be a Democrat as most children raised in union family America are. I remember all the jokes, I remember singing in chorus on the play ground, “My president has a first name it’s R-O-N-A-L-D. My president has a second name it’s R-E-A-G-A-N. And if you as me why I’ll say… Rotten Ronnie has a way of screwing up the U-S-A!” Think Oscar Meyer Bologna commercials. Where are the children who sang it with me? They don’t live here in logger country anymore, they moved to Idaho mostly.

As a matter of fact that elementary school is still there, barely, it’s student population has fallen by 50% and it is still a repository for leftist propaganda and environmental fallacy. President Reagan was elected in landslides. Against all the punditry. Folksy, cheesy, aw shucks, President who did more in eight years to transform America than any President since FDR. Only Reagan started the longest period of economic growth in U.S. history while FDR presided over the great depression.

Is Palin another Reagan? No, nor should we yearn for the past. Rather Palin embodies the optimism and “Shining City on a Hill” view of our nation as Reagan did and when compared to President Obama’s apologizing to the world for being American and our economy headed for possibly the worst down turn since the 1930’s, Sarah Palin could possibly be the next U.S. President because like President Obama she can run as the Un-Presidential candidate who will throw the D.C. bums out of office.

President Obama,

Feb. 13, 2009

President Obama,

I am one of those people whom you wish to help with this stimulus package. I have a wife and three children, I made quite a bit less last year than in 2007. Tough times. Economic hardships are a very personal and poignant reality. This is no one else’s fault but my own, I claim my mistakes.

This new tone that you have brought to Washington leaves me just a little puzzled. A few years ago our nation rushed to war after only six months and two congressional affirmations of the President’s policy. That was clearly a bi-partisan issue. The fiscal policies of the last two decades are as bi-partisan as can possibly be. However the present circumstance is the result of eight years of President Bush’s failed economic policy.

Dissent IS Patriotic. I recall that being quite the rally point on the left in 2003 and all through out the war in Iraq. Now however the situation is so dire that no opposition can be brooked, any debate is delay and the cost of inaction is to terrible to contemplate.

Why can’t we wait six days to pass this package? Not six months, not six days. Because you know that this is not the change that the American People want. If you were confident in our support for this very important legislation you wouldn’t be opposed to giving us six days to look it over.

Not only are you quick to judge us incapable of comprehending the pressing necessity and brilliance of your stimulus package but there are calls for opposing voices to be silenced, with the fairness doctrine. Your policies will have to stand up to public critique sooner or later, unless you plan on censoring other forms of media as well.

“Buy American,” wasn’t so popular with our European Allies. That was quickly pulled from this legislation, when did their opinion become so much more important than the 46% of Americans who voted for the other guy. If 46% is too small a percentage for you to listen to, how about the nearly 60% of Americans who have serious misgivings about this legislation?

Six days, is that too much to ask?

Respectfully,

Nathan A. Steeves

WE WILL BE PHARAOH’S SERVANTS

There was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very sore, so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan fainted by reason of the famine. And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the corn which they bought: and Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh’s house. And when money failed in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came unto Joseph, and said, “Give us bread: for why should we die in they presence? For the money faileth.”
And Joseph said, “Give your cattle; and I will give you for your cattle, if money fail.” And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the herds, and for the asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.
When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, “We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands: wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.” And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine prevailed over them: so the land became Pharaoh’s.
And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof. Only the land of the priests bought he not; for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh, and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them; wherefore they sold not their lands. Then Joseph said unto the people, “Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. And it shall come to pass in the increase, that ye shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for food for your little ones.”
And they said, “Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and WE WILL BE PHARAOH’S SERVANTS.”

President Obama said, “Companies sustained these people for years.” The people of Indiana were sustained by industry? Not the Government. Get out of here!

President Obama said that this stimulus package would, “Save or create four million jobs.” So what he’s saying is that he no longer believes that this bill will create four million jobs. He has to be able to claim that he “Saved” four million jobs. Pretty slick.

President Obama said, “Government is the only entity with the resources,” to save this nation. I thought that Government only has resources by taking them from the people. Taxation is the only supply of Government resources. So President Obama spending your money will stimulate the economy. You are not qualified to determine how best to spend your money, only he is. So there isn’t enough money in the U.S. Treasury to cover this bill, President Obama, has thought that out as well, this plan is, “For the future of our children and grandchildren.”

And we will be the federal government’s servants, we and our children, forever. I stand now and proudly pledge my tax support as well as that of my children and grandchildren to this stimulus package. Because I believe my job will be one of the four million jobs saved and that is worth my grandchildren paying for it.

Thank you, Mr. President, I’ll never be able to thank you enough.

State Employees, Want Some Cheese With That Whine?

Fox News Story

California State Employees are a perfect example of why Government is not the solution to the Nation’s economic woes. The State of California is Billions of Dollars in the Red. When a Company is hugely in the red it cuts its workforce. The California unemployment rate is 9.3 and these furloughs will reduce state workers salary by 9.2 percent. This seems like a reasonable ratio.

NEWS FLASH! State workers if you worked for someone other than the benevolent State of California they would slash the workforce by 15%. If I were an employer I’d make sure the most discontent 15% were gone tomorrow, they are likely the least efficient of my employees.

Second point of note, although I really feel your pain, if I worked for a corporation that is in as bad a shape as California I’d be looking for another job because they would be in serious danger of shutting down, indefinitely, that could mean a reduction of your salary by 100%. No call back, no “Back to work on Monday” or any other day. You and thousands of other employees with comparable qualifications trying to find a place in an economy that is shedding jobs.

I’m sure that the 9.3 percent of Californians who are unemployed would gladly trade their status for your 9.2% reduction in pay.

"It feels like we're being punished because we chose a career in state government," said Shelia Byars, 47, a hearing officer at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Van Nuys.
Byars, who expected to lose $400 a month, was among about a dozen union members protesting outside the agency's office in downtown Los Angeles. She said it didn't make sense to close 180 DMV locations because they collect revenue for the state through licenses and registration fees.

Last point, to those of you who work at the DMV, those fees (taxes) you would have collected on Friday, they will be collected another day. You see as taxpayers we don’t get the option to not pay taxes, unlike the State which can decide not to refund overpayment of taxes.

Limburger, that’s a nice stinky cheese. Enjoy.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The third unalienable right stated as the purpose of government is the one which explicitly requires citizens to put forth effort. While life and liberty will not be maintained with out a conscientious practice thereof, “The pursuit of happiness,” contains with in it the expression of an individual responsibility to strive for pleasure.

So often today people are expecting things to be handed to them. Whether necessary or frivolous everything should be provided by government. The events of the past few days should cry a warning to those who are paying attention that government help always has a negative quality to it.

Executives of the big three automotive industry are in Washington, hat in hand, hoping that the government will bail them out of the mess that they are in. They are responsible for their own short sighted management of their affairs. There are very real consequences for the mismanagement of a major corporation. Lay offs, loss of capital, harm to the national economic welfare. That is why executives receive executive pay.

So having failed in their duties to guide and manage their Corporations to profitability or even viability, these men are in Washington, begging for the government to help them out. The Congress says, “Sure, glad to help, let us just give you what you need to keep afloat.” Not. They are willing to help with the proviso of them being able to meddle in an industry for which they have no credentials. The only history that congress has in the economic sphere is negative. If you can think of a single instance where government involvement in an industry was ever anything but disastrous, please feel free to list the examples in your comments.

So in the pursuit of happiness it is incumbent upon the pursuers to do it in a self reliant fashion or the pursuit will be infringed upon by external forces, most notably government. Government ain’t in the happy business. There is no Department of Happiness, there is no Happiness depot that the government has the keys to. If you wish to be happy, get to it. You have been equipped with all that is necessary for this pursuit by the same creator who endowed you with the right to seek happiness.

Liberty

My county tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing.

Second only to Life, Jefferson listed liberty as one of the aims of American Independence, and yes, a God given right. Liberty is to the human spirit what air is to the human body. We inhale it’s fragrance and revel in it’s power.

As a child I learned of the horrors of communism, we were told that in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics people were tested as children and assigned to a job in which they would serve the republic. A drudgery relieved only by death or disablement. Perhaps my juvenile way of understanding magnified this terror but to believe that Government would chart your life from cradle to the grave seemed an abomination to all that I hold dear.

Our liberties in America are bounded by our government and we are free to change our Government and laws as we see fit. If a portion of our Constitution becomes onerous we have the means to change it as well. If we become dissatisfied with our station in life we are free to change it. If we dislike the weather we are free to seek a better climate.

Liberty is an awesome responsibility because it makes us all individually accountable for our actions. We are free to press to the pinnacle of success and we should be free to fall in the chasm of abysmal failure.

We are free to speak our mind, but with that freedom comes the power to impede the freedom of others. You are free to express yourself, but it is incumbent upon each of us to refrain from shouting down or stifling some one else’s free speech.

When I witness anyone stepping on another’s freedom of speech it screams louder than words that they do not believe in the superiority of their position. If your logic is unassailable then you allow your enemies to dash themselves upon the ramparts. The free exchange of ideals can only work absent physical or emotional intimidation. A majority achieved does not imply superiority and the lone voice of dissent may just be the only voice present with the solution to our problems.

Life

People are eager to declare that this is the end of the line for conservatism in general and the pro-life issue in particular. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Jefferson said these were God given rights in the declaration of Independence. They are also the core of Conservatism.

What is Life? It is nothing more than this brief period during which we can determine our own end. The founding fathers thought that it was the paramount function of our government to ensure that every one gets that chance. It is the responsibility of all governments to ensure the safety of their citizens. Citizens of any state that does not value them will naturally seek a better state. Where do people go seeking a better state?
They overwhelmingly seek the United States of America.

A nation that devalues life will inevitably become a cruel tyrannical place.

When this value is placed upon unborn children people get all wrapped up in it. I’ve heard people come unhinged on both sides. The simple fact of it is, “If it is not a baby, you are not pregnant.” A bumper sticker slogan, but it’s true none the less. A woman who is pregnant has no constitutional right to kill the child to further her education.

Jefferson’s “Life,” does not have any addendums to it. Aged life, young life, fit life, paralyzed life, rich life, poor life, it simply says LIFE. My life. Your life. Think long and hard before you begin discounting any life, you may just forfeit yours.

If this is the issue upon which a political campaign is lost then I would lose a thousand before I relented. Principals are principals. If the progressives ever convince a majority of Americans that life should not be a sacred right, then our Nation will join all previous great nations on the dust heap of history.

Common Sense Consevatism

There is a lot of hand wringing and soul searching going on in the conservative movement these days.

The Republicans are debating a move to the center which means a move leftward.

“Facts are stubborn things,” John Adams proclaimed in his defense of the British Soldiers indicted in the Boston Massacre. He was famously correct and the beleaguered soldiers were exonerated. Principals founded in facts are equally stubborn. At least they should be.

People talk of the Reagan revolution and Newt’s contract with America. These movements or platforms succeeded overwhelmingly when presented to Americans with clarity and conviction. Making things simple with out being simplistic, conservatism is and always should be able to be summed up, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

Life requires security, a strong national defense. America is the shining city on the hill. It is in the limelight constantly, not every one will love us and see us in a favorable light. That’s their problem, doesn’t bother me a bit, unless they undertake to assault us. If the shining city on the hill is known to be guarded by the greatest military force in the world it deters nefarious deeds against it’s citizens.

Liberty also requires security, but with out life, liberty is meaningless. Being free to make your own decisions only has meaning if you feel secure in the exercise of your liberties. If you are coerced, leaned upon, encouraged in a particular path, are you really at liberty to decide for yourself?

The Pursuit of Happiness occurs when the first two conditions are met. If you are secure, if you are free, wouldn’t you naturally choose a path that will make you happy? The vast majority of people would, and if you get your kicks off of flagellation, self inflicted-pain, knock yourself out. When you look on your neighbors being happy in their pursuits, smack yourself harder, just don’t smack them. Your right to achieve nirvana by beating yourself up is your right, but you have no right to endanger the life or liberty of others in your misery.

There it is, conservatism in a nutshell. If we hold these truths to be self evident and facts are stubborn things, so should our fact based principals remain equally sure.

Mr. President

I’m not a fan of Barack Obama. I am happy for his supporters and rejoice that our nation has moved beyond race in politics.

I believe fervently in America. We are a resilient nation, full of hope and ideals. So long as we remain free we will have the power to mend what needs mending and stand willing to walk the extra mile.

Barack Obama, America has placed her trust in you, keep that faith.

George W. Bush found that doing what is right has a price and failing to rein in rampant Gov. Spending has a greater than monetary cost. But you will have one thing (from me at least) that President Bush did not. A respectful opposition. You will be from Jan. 20, 2009 forward be referred to as, “Mr. President.” Wear the title well, the American people have bestowed it with their full faith and confidence.

Twas the Night Before the Election

This is not original with me, it was forwarded to me from a friend, origins unknown, but I got a laugh out of it and thought I'd share.

Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political ....

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi'
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note-
IF YOU DON'T WANT SOCIALISM
GET OUT AND VOTE!!

It Can’t Be Over, I Haven’t Voted Yet

I’m looking forward to tomorrow, Nov. 4, 2008. I’m sick of being told that the election is over, I’m sick of being called bitter, racist, ignorant. I’m sick of my values being trashed for political expediency, I forgot to add “homophobe,” since I reside here in California.

Now I remember why I canceled my subscription to News Papers (all of them) about four years ago. That’s why I’m ignorant, how can I be informed if I don’t let the journalists tell me what to think? They’re doing a good job, too. I hear that circulation is really booming, hiring new generations of journalists at a blistering pace (chortle).

When my daughter was about five years old, she asked me, “What is a ‘black man?’” I stopped what I was doing and explained, “Well, that’s a what some people call people who have dark skin.” The church we attended was about 40% “Black,” so I was able to gently name people in our church, close friends, her playmates, her children’s church teachers until she had a grasp of the term “black.” When she understood the distinction she gave a delighted little giggle and said, “You mean a chocolate face?” I was pleased that she had come up for a term to describe her friends much more appropriately than, “Black.” Race isn’t an issue to me. I tear up when I hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream Speech.” I’m not voting for Obama, it’s not the color of his skin, it’s the content of his character.

“Bitter.” I’m really trying hard not to allow the press to make that one true. I love America and people in general. My step father is “black.” I haven’t talked to Pops in about six weeks. He found out that I lean Republican and it was a very uncomfortable day at the drag races. Pops loves me enough not to argue politics with me, but his friends were not afraid to mutter epithets until pops had to physically subdue one of his close friends. Awkward, very much so. I hope after this election I’ll be able to visit my mother and Pops with out that elephant in the room. One could become bitter over all the animosity that has been fomented around this election.

In spite of all of this, and perhaps even partially because of it, I’m looking forward to voting on Tuesday. I want my voice to be heard. I am very optimistic about our Nation and it’s future. I think that all the differences will come out in the wash and that the biggest losers are the media who have declared this election repeatedly for Obama. I could almost hope that he wins in a landslide, like they are predicting, just to avoid crushing all his supporters. Almost.

People ask, “Who’s your man in the race?” I smile and say, “Sarah Palin.” Let the epithets roll, I’m still voting tomorrow and this election is not over yet.

The Play at First

Left handed pitchers fall away to the left side of the diamond, just like a right handed pitcher falls away to the right side of the in field. Natural pitching mechanics. If you are trying to bunt for a base hit off a left handed pitcher you want the ball far enough away from the catcher and close enough to the first base man that you are either in a foot race between the pitcher who feel toward third base trying to retrieve the ball and feed to the first baseman or you are trying to beat the pitcher to first base to receive the through from the charging first baseman. If the hitter rolls one down the first base line and digs hard, there usually isn’t a play at first.

In game three of the World series there was a play where Carl Crawford, a speedy runner, executed a perfect bunt down the right field line, hard enough to get away from the catcher, Ryan Howard the first baseman immediately recognized that he wouldn’t have time to get the ball and beat the runner or flip to the pitcher Moyer. He went to the bag because it was the only shot they had at getting the runner. It set up one of the most incredible defensive plays I have ever seen by a pitcher. Jamie Moyer displayed all the heart and athleticism you would expect of a 22 year veteran of the Major Leagues. In a race against a younger faster man, he some how got the ball, no way he can transfer it from his glove and make a throw with his bare hand, so flying through the air like Charlie Hustle (Pete Rose) he flips the ball toward first with his glove. Ryan Howard snatches the beautiful awkward toss with his bare hand just an instant before the runner’s foot hit first base. Leave you breathless kind of play. The runner is… safe. On the replay you can see the umpire is behind Ryan and watching the ball not go to his glove, there is no way he can see Ryan’s hand seize the ball, it looks like the runner is safe. That’s baseball.

The Play at First

I couldn’t help but draw the analogy. First of all they are playing in Pennsylvania. Young athletic guy who lays down a textbook bunt and is sprinting toward the inevitable base hit, Barack Obama. Old Guy dogging his steps toward the goal, John McCain. John McCain wasn’t my choice for President in this election cycle but you can not deny the determination and skill with which he has run against the younger, smoother Barack Obama. Odds are against him, he shouldn’t even have the ball in his glove right now, events have conspired against him, he doesn’t have time to retool and refocus, he needs to get his message to voters right now. He flips to the voters as Barack stretches for victory. And the call is… You make the call.

You can never deny that you have seen one of the greatest feats in politics, an old warrior and statesman following an unpopular president shouldn’t even be in the race, and yet there is a tenacity about him that refuses to be retired. He’s pushing hard and I think it will be a close play Nov. 4th. Forget the glove, keep your eyes on the ball and make the right call this time.

"Prop. 8 is Hate"

I have a vivid memory of the High School Bully rearing back and firing a basket ball overhand down the hall at the Gay Kid. I can close my eyes right now and relive it’s every detail. That was hate. I’m not naming names because that’s not the point. I had great compassion and sympathy for the victim of this crime, a side from the normal human empathy for the victim, the Bully also picked on 110 lb. geeks (which included me).

A few years later I served with a very effeminate male Marine. I didn’t ask and he never explicitly told me, but he was gay. He was not warmly welcomed into the brotherhood of warriors but he was tolerated, treated with respect.

Tolerance of those with whom you disagree, politically, religiously, morally is always preferable to violence.

This is a letter to the editor that appeared in a local paper the
Eureka Reporter

"I’m disgusted, to say the least. For the second time in a week, someone has stolen/destroyed my neighbors’ “Yes on Prop 8” sign in their front yard. I’ve personally had my magnetic “Support Our Troops” decals stolen from the tailgate of my truck, and my truck “keyed” along the back quarter panel. Does this mean that the liberal left has resorted to this kind of behavior?
Here’s my view of what seems to be going on throughout our county. Acts of vandalism, destruction of private property — if you don’t agree with the liberal left, suffer the consequences.
As I drive around our county, I see yards with Obama, No on Prop 8, Mike Thompson, Peace not War, or Chesbro signs that have not been vandalized. Does this mean the liberal left is composed of bigots and the conservative right is tolerant? Whatever happened to freedom of speech?"

Free speech is constitutionally protected. At least it was the last time I checked.

This is from another local paper the Times Standard

“The Trinity Baptist Church in Arcata is the polling place for about 600 voters from two precincts.
But for months, church officials have proudly displayed “Yes on Proposition 8” signs on church property. Until Saturday, in fact, the church's marquee displayed the message: “God loves you. Protect marriage.”
But that message, along with several dozen small signs, fell victim Saturday to what seems to be an escalating battle between the two sides. Someone used brown spray paint to scrawl “8 is hate” across the church's sign, causing about $300 in damage.
Pastor John McCain -- who goes by Larry -- said he is within his legal rights to display that message, even through election day, since the sign is located more than 100 feet from the church's entrance.”

Radio reports indicate that a church worker was confronted and told that if any more “Yes on Prop 8” signs went up they would be torn down also. That is physical intimidation of your political opponents.

Proposition 8 defines marriage as between one man and one woman. My opinion is that it is necessary because I do not wish to have morals being decided by the government. Children were taught about gay sex when I was in High School so education is not an issue. What people who oppose Prop. 8 are seeking is a government endorsement of the homosexual lifestyle. Plain and simple.
